Cootie Catcher

👥 2–4 players 📍 Outdoor📍 Anywhere ⚡ Active 🧩 Simple ⏱ 5-20 minutes 🎂 Ages 4+

Quick Pitch

The Cootie Catcher is a folded paper fortune teller — one player operates the origami device while another picks colors and numbers to reveal a hidden "fortune."

Hook

You fold a piece of paper into a little beak-shaped device, write silly fortunes inside, and suddenly you're a fortune teller. "Pick a color." "Now pick a number." Open, close, open, close… "Your fortune is: you will step in something gross today." Cootie Catchers are as fun to make as they are to use, and kids have been delighting in them since at least the 1950s.

Equipment Needed

  • Sheet of paper (square, 8.5×8.5 inch recommended)
  • Pencil or pen
  • Colored pencils or markers (optional, for artistic design)

Setup

  1. Start with a square piece of paper (cut a standard sheet to 8.5×8.5 inches)
  2. Fold the paper following origami instructions (see "Making a Cootie Catcher" below)
  3. Write numbers or colors on the outer flaps
  4. Write fortunes or messages under the inner flaps
  5. Insert thumbs and index fingers into the four pockets underneath

Rules

  1. Two players required: One operator and one selector
  2. Operator holds device: Person A puts thumbs and index fingers into the underside pockets
  3. Selector makes choices: Person B points to an option on the outer flaps
  4. Open and close: Operator opens and closes the device once for each letter or number in the chosen option (spelling or counting)
  5. Reveal and choose again: After completing the sequence, new options are revealed, and the selector picks another
  6. Final choice reveals fortune: The selector picks one more time and the operator opens the corresponding flap to reveal the final fortune or message
  7. Cannot repeat options: Once a fortune is revealed, that flap is no longer available for future games (optional rule)
  8. Players may alternate: After several rounds, players can trade roles so each gets a turn as operator
