Rummy 500 (500 Rummy)
Quick Pitch
Rummy 500 is a multi-player rummy variant where all players contribute melds to a central layout.
Equipment Needed
- One standard 52-card deck (for 2-4 players)
- Two standard decks shuffled together (for 5+ players)
- Paper and pencil for score tracking
Setup
- Deal 13 cards to each player, one at a time (or 11 cards for 4+ players)
- Place remaining cards face-down as stock
- Flip top card face-up to start discard pile
- Each player's melds are placed in front of them
Rules
Objective
Form and meld sets and runs, adding to melds when possible. Accumulate points from melds. First to 500 points wins.
Melds
Sets: Three or more cards of same rank (K♠ K♥ K♦)
Runs: Three or more consecutive cards of same suit (5♥ 6♥ 7♥)
Adding to melds: Any player can add matching cards to their own melds on their turn
- Sets: Add cards of the matching rank
- Runs: Add consecutive cards to either end (5♦ 6♦ 7♦ 8♦ builds on 6♦ 7♦ 8♦)
Card Values for Scoring
- Ace: 1 or 11 points (1 if in A-2-3 run; 11 if in Q-K-A run)
- King, Queen, Jack: 10 points
- Number cards: Face value (2-10)
Gameplay
- Draw phase: Player draws one card from stock or discard pile (can see discard before choosing)
- Meld phase: Player may meld new sets/runs or add to existing melds
- Discard phase: Player discards one card face-up to discard pile
- Melds visible: All players see melds and can verify them
Optional rule: Players can pick up any face-up card from discard pile (taking any cards above it) if they can immediately use it in a meld.
Scoring
Melds laid down:
- Player scores the point value of all cards in their laid melds
- Example: K♠ K♥ K♦ scores 30 points
Adding to melds:
- When adding cards to existing melds, player scores points for cards added
- Example: Adding 4♦ to existing 2♦ 3♦ 4♦ scores 4 points
Unmatched cards (when hand empties or game ends):
- Subtract unmatched card values from player's score
Game ending: When one player empties their hand (goes out), that hand is scored and a new hand is dealt. Continue until a player reaches 500+ points.

Tips
- Meld planning: Balance creating new melds with adding to existing ones
- Card visibility: All melds are visible; consider what opponents might need
- Discard management: Avoid discarding cards opponents can easily use
- Drawing strategy: Stock draws are risk-free but random; discard picks are targeted
- Sequential building: Runs allow flexibility for adding cards to either end
- Going out: Being first to empty hand gives scoring advantage
- Point calculation: Track which melds are worth most points
Variations
- Contract Rummy: Players must make specific combinations of sets/runs each round
- Combination Rummy: Players must meld specific point totals before going out
- Multiplayer Rummy: Adapts rules for 5+ players with two decks
- No-add variant: Players cannot add cards to existing melds (only form new ones)
